Biography

Franklin Dollar is a Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of California, Irvine, where he has been a faculty member since 2015. He also serves as the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in the School of Physical Sciences at UCI. Dollar received his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the University of Michigan in 2012, where he also completed a Graduate Certificate in Plasma Science & Engineering and an M.S.E. in Electrical Engineering. Prior to joining UCI, Dollar was a Senior Research Associate in the Kapteyn-Murnane group at JILA, affiliated with the University of Colorado, Boulder, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Dollar’s research is centered on ultrafast x-ray sources and their applications, focusing on ultrafast laser plasma interactions, including light ion acceleration, electron acceleration, neutron generation, and high-order harmonic generation. He has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and has been cited more than 4,600 times, reflecting his significant contributions to the field. His research has been supported by several major grants, including funding from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. Notable honors include the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2018 and the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in 2016.

At UCI, Dollar teaches courses ranging from introductory mechanics to advanced plasma physics, and he has supervised numerous graduate and undergraduate students in their research projects. He is actively involved in professional service, holding positions such as Member-at-large on the Division of Plasma Physics Executive Committee of the American Physical Society. Additionally, Dollar has contributed to the enhancement of diversity and inclusion within the scientific community through his involvement with the Cal-Bridge Partnership and Mentoring Committee and his service on the Academic Senate Council on Equity & Inclusion at UCI.
