Alexis Bouin
UCI CNCM Viral Core Director, Center for Neural Circuit Mapping
Associate Specialist, Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, School of Medicine
Biography
Alexis Bouin, Ph.D., is Director of the UCI CNCM Viral Core and Associate Specialist in the Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at the University of California, Irvine. Bouin received a Ph.D. in Virology from the Unit of Medical and Molecular Virology at the Faculty of Medicine in Reims, France. His research focuses on enterovirus persistence in cardiac tissue and the development of viral tools for neural circuit mapping.
Bouin's work has examined the role of 5' terminally deleted enterovirus genomic RNA populations in persistent cardiac infections, particularly in patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. His research has demonstrated that these viral populations retain proteinase activities and contribute to chronic cardiac disease. He has also contributed to the development of new rabies viral resources for multi-scale neural circuit mapping, expanding the toolkit available for neuroscience research.
Bouin has published in journals including Nature Communications, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, Molecular Psychiatry, Journal of Virology, and Circulation. He was awarded the Hewitt Foundation for Medical Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship from 2016 to 2019. He serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for multiple journals including Nucleic Acid Research, PLOS Pathogens, and Viruses.
