Adeela Syed

Associate Project Scientist, Optical Biology Core Manager

Biography

Adeela Syed, Ph.D., is Associate Project Scientist and Manager of the Optical Biology Core Facility at the University of California, Irvine. Over 15 years, she has expanded the core from 2 confocal microscopes to a comprehensive advanced imaging suite including 4 confocals, 1 mesoscale light-sheet microscope, 1 super-resolution microscope, and 1 automated slide scanner, securing over $1 million in institutional funds and co-authoring a successful NIH S10 proposal for over $600,000 in external funding. She has trained more than 1,500 researchers since 2011 on confocal, super-resolution, and light-sheet microscopy platforms, supporting research across multiple departments.

Syed founded and co-leads the UC-wide Imaging Core Working Group, a system-wide initiative connecting imaging core personnel from all 10 UC campuses to share best practices and operational strategies. She co-organizes the Advanced Imaging Methods (AIM) Workshop at UC Berkeley and was co-organizer of the inaugural FLAIR (Fluorescence Advanced Imaging Research) Workshop, which merged the UCI Laboratory Fluorescence Dynamics and UC Berkeley AIM meetings into the largest west coast advanced fluorescence imaging meeting with over 100 attendees. She was selected as an invited presenter at the Global BioImaging Exchange of Experience Conference and participated in the Global BioImaging Facility Management Course in Montreal, Canada.

Syed's research background includes work on Huntington's Disease mechanisms, HDAC inhibitors, and Wnt and BMP morphogen regulation during her postdoctoral and project scientist positions at UC Irvine. She received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles.
