Biography

Alden Folsom Smith, MD, is Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery at the University of California, Irvine. He completed his otolaryngology residency at UCLA and a laryngology fellowship at Stanford University, and he is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology. Prior to joining UC Irvine, he served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery at Loma Linda University.

Smith's clinical and research interests center on laryngology and swallowing disorders. His research has included histopathological studies of laryngeal tissue, videofluoroscopic analysis of swallowing outcomes, and outcomes following procedures such as partial epiglottidectomy and transoral robotic surgery. He has also contributed to global health research, conducting fieldwork in Ethiopia to study the prevalence of hearing loss and ear disease among HIV-positive children.

Smith received his MD from Temple University School of Medicine. He serves as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Voice and the Laryngoscope.
