Biography
Mohammad Al Faruque, Ph.D., is Conexant-Broadcom Endowed Chair Professor and Director of the Center for Resilient Autonomous Systems in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine. He holds courtesy appointments in the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Al Faruque received his Ph.D. in Computer Science (magna cum laude) from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, where he focused on runtime adaptive system-on-chip communication architecture. Before joining UCI in 2012, he worked as a Research Scientist at Siemens Corporate Research in Princeton, New Jersey.
Al Faruque's research focuses on cross-layer security of embedded and cyber-physical systems, with applications in autonomous vehicles, manufacturing systems, and mobile health. He has received the IEEE CEDA Ernest S. Kuh Early Career Award and the IEEE Technical Committee on Cyber-Physical Systems Early-Career Award, both recognizing one individual worldwide annually. He is one of the few researchers to have received best paper awards at all three top computer-aided design conferences: ICCAD (2009), DAC (2015), and DATE (2016). His work on electric vehicle charging infrastructure received the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award in 2016.
Al Faruque is an ACM Distinguished Speaker and served as IEEE CEDA Distinguished Lecturer. He has served as Program Chair for CODES+ISSS (2022-2023) and General Chair for ICCPS (2022) and CPS-IoT Week (2025). He is Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems, IEEE Design & Test, and ACM Transactions on Design Automation on Electronics and Systems. Al Faruque co-founded FlexAI, a company based on technologies developed in his laboratory for edge computing and split computing. He has been Principal Investigator on projects funded by NSF, DARPA, the U.S. Army, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and industry partners including Siemens and Cisco.
