Alfred Chen

Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of California, Irvine

Biography

Alfred Chen, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine. He leads the AS²Guard (Autonomous & Smart Systems Guard) research group, with a general focus on security and safety of computer technologies that are of high criticality to our daily life and society. Chen received a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where his dissertation received the ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award and was nominated for the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award.

Chen's research has been the first to perform security analysis and defense designs on various mission- and safety-critical autonomous systems AI components, such as perception, object tracking, localization, lane detection, multi-sensor fusion, prediction, and planning systems. His work has triggered over 30 autonomous vehicle companies to investigate newly-discovered security vulnerabilities, with some confirming work on fixes. Chen has been invited to speak about this research at organizations including NHTSA, GM, Toyota, IBM, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm. He was also the leading co-founder of the USENIX/ISOC Symposium on Vehicle Security & Privacy (VehicleSec) in 2023 and the AutoSec Workshop in 2019, and co-created DEF CON's first autonomous driving-themed hacking event in 2021.

Chen has received the NSF CAREER Award and the UC Irvine Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentorship. As faculty advisor for Cyber@UCI, he has guided the team to become the first UC campus to win the National Champion (1st Place) in the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in 2025, the largest college-level cyber defense contest in the US. His research has been constantly published in top-tier security conferences including IEEE S&P, USENIX Security, ACM CCS, and NDSS, as well as in top-tier AI, computer vision, and robotics venues such as CVPR, ICCV, ICLR, AAAI, IROS, and ICRA.
