Biography

Ahmed Mohyeldin, M.D., Ph.D., is Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at UC Irvine School of Medicine, where he also serves as Team Leader of the Neuro-Oncology Disease Oriented program at the Chao Cancer Center and Co-Director of the Endoscopic Skull Base Program and Pituitary Center. He received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and his M.D. from George Washington University School of Medicine. Following neurosurgery residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, he completed dual fellowships in skull base and endoscopic cranial surgery at Ohio State and Stanford University Medical Center. Before pursuing medicine, Mohyeldin was a professional soccer player, drafted 8th overall in the first round by the Atlanta Silverbacks of the United States Soccer League.

Mohyeldin's research focuses on the molecular biology of brain tumors and skull base neoplasms, with particular emphasis on glioblastoma stem cells and pituitary adenomas. His laboratory work has examined cancer stem cell biology, tumor metabolism, and the role of transcription factors in tumor invasion and progression. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles and contributed 11 book chapters to neurosurgical texts. His clinical research has advanced understanding of pituitary adenoma invasion patterns, particularly regarding cavernous sinus involvement and its implications for surgical outcomes in acromegaly and Cushing's disease.

Mohyeldin received the Fred Gentili Clinical Excellence Award from the North American Skull Base Society in 2022 and the Rhoton Award for Best Anatomical Paper in 2023. He has been awarded multiple research grants, including a Maryland Stem Cell Postdoctoral Research Fellowship and a NASBS Career Development Award. He serves on the NASBS Research Committee and Grant Review Committee, and is an ad hoc reviewer for multiple neurosurgical journals. Mohyeldin is actively involved in clinical trials investigating novel treatments for glioblastoma and brain metastases, serving as principal investigator on studies examining surgical management of chronic subdural hematomas and as co-investigator on trials evaluating immunotherapy and radiosurgery approaches.
