Angxiu Ni

Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics

Biography

Angxiu Ni, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Irvine. A scholar in applied and computational dynamical systems and probability, Ni develops methods for computing derivatives of averaged statistics in random systems, including the fast response method, the path-kernel method, and the divergence-kernel method. His research focuses on the numerical interaction with chaos across fields such as optimization, fluids, climate, inference, data assimilation, and machine learning.

Ni received a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 2021, where he was advised by John Strain. Prior to joining UC Irvine in 2024, he held positions as a tenure-track assistant professor at Yau Math Sciences Center at Tsinghua University and as a Boya Postdoctoral Fellow at the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research at Peking University, where he worked with Pingwen Zhang. He also served as Manager of Undergraduate Affairs at Qiuzhen College, Tsinghua University.

Ni received the Friedman Memorial Prize in Applied Mathematics from UC Berkeley in 2021. He has published extensively on sensitivity analysis and linear response in chaotic systems, with work appearing in journals including the Journal of Nonlinear Science, SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, Journal of Computational Physics, and Journal of Fluid Mechanics. He organized the minisymposium "Linear response / sensitivity analysis / backpropagation in chaos" at the 2021 SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering.
