Annie Wang

Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of California Irvine School of Medicine

Biography

Annie Wang, M.D., is Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine. She received her Doctor of Medicine from New York University School of Medicine and completed her general surgery residency at NYU, where she also served as an NIH T32 Grant-Supported Postdoctoral Fellow at the NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center. She completed an Advanced Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery Fellowship at the University of California Davis School of Medicine.

Wang's research spans translational cancer biology and clinical outcomes in metabolic and bariatric surgery. Her work on POLQ inhibition in homologous recombination-deficient pancreatic adenocarcinoma, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, demonstrated how this therapeutic approach elicits an immune response via cGAS/STING signaling. She has also contributed to multi-institutional studies examining disparities in hepatocellular carcinoma and gastric cancer outcomes at safety net hospitals. Her recent clinical research focuses on metabolic disease outcomes following bariatric surgery, including the development of an objective metabolic scoring system to predict disease remission based on preoperative severity.

Wang is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and holds fellowship certificates from the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. She is an Associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Foregut Society. She has authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications and has presented her research at national conferences, including a top papers presentation at the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Annual Meeting in 2024.
