Biography

Alan R. Schenk, M.D., FACP, FACR, RhMSUS is HS Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine in 1978, followed by an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Greater Miami and a fellowship in Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at UC Irvine. Schenk is board certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, and holds additional certification in Rheumatology Musculoskeletal Ultrasound from the American College of Rheumatology.

Schenk maintained a clinical practice in rheumatology in Orange County, California since 1984, including over three decades in solo practice and later as Medical Director of the Arthritis & Rheumatic Disease Center in Laguna Woods. He served as Medical Director of The Osteoporosis Clinic at Saddleback from 1996 to 2013, and was certified in bone density (DXA) scan interpretation by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. His research contributions include work on the immunopathology of cutaneous lupus erythematosus and participation in multiple clinical trials for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis treatments. He has conducts a 6-part annual Ultrasound Workshop series for rheumatology fellows at UC Irvine.

Schenk is a Fellow of both the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Physicians. He has been active in medical education throughout his career, supervising medical students, residents, and fellows in rheumatology clinics and ward rounds, and serving as a preceptor at the California College of Podiatric Medicine. His community service has included serving on the Board of Directors of the Arthritis Foundation Orange County Chapter, directing the Arthritis Clinic at South County Community Clinic for sixteen years, and conducting monthly arthritis education workshops and newspaper columns for the public. He has served on numerous hospital committees at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center and UC Irvine. He continues to serve on the Saddleback Memorial Medical Center CME Committee, which he chaired for 20 years. At UCI, he currently serves on the Physician Action Planning committee.
