Barbara Anne Dosher

UCI Distinguished Professor, Department of Cognitive Sciences

Biography

Barbara Anne Dosher, Ph.D., is UCI Distinguished Professor in the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. She served as Dean of the School of Social Sciences from 2002 to 2013 and as Chair of the Department of Cognitive Sciences from 2000 to 2002. Dosher received a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oregon in 1977.

Dosher's research focuses on visual perception, attention, and perceptual learning. She has developed computational models to characterize how observers improve visual discrimination through practice and how attention modulates visual processing. Her work with collaborator Zhong-Lin Lu has produced influential theories including the perceptual template model of attention and the augmented Hebbian reweighting model of perceptual learning. She has authored two books with Lu: "Visual Psychophysics: From Laboratory to Theory" (2013) and "Perceptual Learning: How experience shapes visual perception" (2020).

Dosher is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences (2011) and a Fellow of the American Psychological Society (2006) and the Society for Experimental Psychologists (1996). She received the Atkinson Prize in Psychological and Cognitive Sciences from the National Academy of Sciences (2018), the Howard Crosby Warren Medal from the Society for Experimental Psychologists (2013), and the Davida Teller Award from the Vision Sciences Society (2019). She served as President of the Society for Mathematical Psychology in 1988 and on the Executive Board of the Vision Sciences Society from 2009 to 2013.
