Biography
Bruce G. Berg, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, where he has been a faculty member since 1991. His research focuses on auditory perception and psychoacoustics, with particular emphasis on understanding how the auditory system processes complex sounds, temporal and spectral information, and the relationship between psychophysical measurements and auditory periphery function. Berg received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Indiana University in 1987, followed by an NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Berg has secured multiple grants from the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, and Air Force Office of Scientific Research to support his research on auditory discrimination, signal detection, and the effects of sensory stimuli on task performance. His work spans both basic auditory science and applied domains, including investigations of how auditory distractions affect security-critical tasks such as CAPTCHA completion. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in journals including the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Psychological Review, and Hearing Research, developing models of auditory processing and investigating phenomena such as profile analysis, comodulation masking release, and temporal sensitivity.
Berg has served on the National Science Foundation's Perception and Action Committee and participated in National Academy of Science reviews. At UC Irvine, he has held numerous service roles including membership on the Human Subjects Ethics Committee, Council on Research, Computing, and Libraries, and served as Chair of the Council for Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools. He has supervised eight doctoral students to completion, teaching graduate courses in hearing, signal detection theory, and auditory models, as well as undergraduate courses in sound and hearing, experimental methodology, and MATLAB programming.
