Biography

Bryce A. Mander, Ph.D., is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of California, Irvine, with affiliated appointments in the Departments of Cognitive Sciences and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He is director of the Sleep, Cognitive Aging, and Neurodegeneration Laboratory and a faculty member of the UCI Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders. His research focuses on the relationships between sleep disruption, Alzheimer's disease pathophysiology, and memory impairment in aging, with particular emphasis on how NREM sleep oscillations and obstructive sleep apnea interact with amyloid and tau burden across the preclinical stages of Alzheimer's disease.

Mander's work has appeared in journals including Nature Neuroscience, Neuron, Nature Reviews Neuroscience, and the Journal of Neuroscience, and his publications have accumulated over 10,000 citations. He has been the recipient of NIH funding as principal investigator, including a K01 award from the National Institute on Aging and an active R01 award examining longitudinal relationships between Alzheimer's disease pathophysiology, local sleep expression, and sleep-dependent memory. He received the American Academy of Neurology's Wayne A. Hening Sleep Medicine Investigator Award in 2016 and serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of AstronauTx, Ltd., a pharmaceutical company focused on treatments for neurodegenerative disease.

Mander has served as Associate Editor for Sleep Advances and as an Editorial Board Member for Sleep. He has held fellowship and postdoctoral positions at the University of California, Berkeley under Matthew P. Walker, Ph.D., and completed his graduate training under Phyllis C. Zee, M.D., Ph.D., at Northwestern University. Mander received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Northwestern University in 2009.
