Anastasia Chumakova
Biography
Anastasia Chumakova, M.D., is Assistant HS Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of California, Irvine. She received her M.D. magna cum laude from Lomonosov Moscow State University Faculty of Medicine in 2014, followed by a neurosurgery internship at Burdenko Neurosurgery Institute in Moscow. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship in cell biology at Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, she transitioned to clinical training at UC Irvine, where she completed her internal medicine internship, neurology residency, and fellowship in multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology. She served as chief resident during her neurology training and became board certified in neurology in 2023.
Chumakova's research focuses on serum biomarkers of neuronal damage and neuroinflammation in multiple sclerosis patients, particularly those receiving B-cell depleting therapies. Her work examines the relationship between BAFF levels, hypogammaglobulinemia, and markers of neuroaxonal damage in patients on ocrelizumab. She has published in journals including Journal of Neuroinflammation, JCI Insight, Cytometry Part A, and Journal of Experimental Medicine, with research spanning from glioblastoma stem cell biology during her postdoctoral work to current investigations in neuroimmunology.
Chumakova maintains an active clinical practice in neuroimmunology, seeing patients with multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, MOG-associated disease, autoimmune encephalitis, and other autoimmune neurological conditions. She has established a dedicated inpatient neuroimmunology consultation service at UC Irvine Medical Center and mentors multiple neurology residents and medical students on research projects involving serum biomarkers and clinical outcomes in neuroimmunological diseases.
