Biography

Yongen Chang, M.D., Ph.D., FASN, is Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), where he also serves as Co-Director of the Center for Glomerular Diseases. Chang received his M.D. from Fudan University Medical Center in Shanghai, China, and his Ph.D. in Physiology, Biophysics and Systems Biology from the Joan & Sanford I. Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences at Cornell University. He completed his nephrology fellowship at UC San Francisco and the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

Chang's research focuses on glomerular diseases and renal fibrosis, with particular emphasis on integrin-mediated mechanisms of kidney injury. His work has examined the role of αv integrins in renal fibrosis and the molecular pathways underlying conditions such as IgA nephropathy, lupus nephritis, and C3 glomerulopathy. He serves as principal investigator or site investigator on multiple clinical trials investigating novel therapies for proteinuric kidney diseases, including APOL1-mediated kidney disease and complement-mediated glomerular disorders. Chang has published research in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and other nephrology journals, and has presented his findings at national meetings of the American Society of Nephrology and the National Kidney Foundation.

Chang served as Program Director of the UCI Nephrology Fellowship Program from 2017 to 2020 and as Site Director for the Long Beach VA Medical Center from 2022 to 2024. He has held leadership roles including Medical Director of the Inpatient Dialysis Unit at UCI Medical Center and Physician Champion for chronic kidney disease transitions at the Long Beach VA. Chang serves on advisory boards for pharmaceutical companies developing therapies for kidney disease and is a Physician Champion for the IgA Nephropathy Foundation. He is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology.
