Matthew D. Dean
Biography
Matthew D. Dean, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a faculty affiliate in the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Irvine. His research focuses on sustainable transportation systems and energy systems, with an emphasis on electric vehicle charging behavior, smart charging programs, and the integration of transportation and power systems.
Dean received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was supported by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. He has secured over $540,000 in research funding as principal investigator at UCI from agencies and organizations including the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the UC Office of the President, and SB1 Funding from the UC Institute of Transportation Studies. He has received the UC Office of the President Early Career Faculty Research Excellence Award for 2026–2027.
Dean has authored over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 35 peer-reviewed conference papers. His work spans topics including shared autonomous electric vehicle fleet management, bidirectional and smart EV charging, peer-to-peer charger sharing, and energy insecurity among medically vulnerable households.
