Biography
Dipal Mahendra Shah, M.B.B.S., M.D., is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care at the University of California, Irvine. Shah received an M.B.B.S. from Seth G.S. Medical College and K.E.M. Hospital in Mumbai, India, and earned an M.D. in Anesthesiology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, after completing her initial anesthesiology residency training in India. She subsequently completed a second full anesthesiology residency at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, after moving to the United States. Shah also completed pediatric anesthesiology fellowship training in both India and the United States, at Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children in Mumbai and Boston Children's Hospital, respectively, and holds board certification in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology from the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Shah's clinical and research interests focus on pediatric anesthesiology, regional anesthesia, pediatric airway management and perioperative pain management. Shah has published research on ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia techniques in children, including studies on continuous peripheral nerve blocks and epidural anesthesia in pediatric populations with complex conditions. Additional research contributions include work on adjuvants for peripheral nerve blocks and pain management strategies in pediatric burn patients. Shah has co-authored a book chapter on anesthesia machines and authored a chapter on fetoscopic surgery in a reference text on obstetric anesthesia.
At UC Irvine, Shah serves as Director of the Main OR Rotation for Residents, Co-Director of the Advanced Airway Rotation, and Lead of the Pediatric 4U Education Service Line. Shah previously served on the Clinical Competency Committee and serves as the departmental liaison to the Beckman Laser Institute. Shah is also actively involved in resident and medical student education and mentorship, including mentoring medical students, residents, and pre-medical students. Her ongoing research and quality improvement initiatives at UCI focus on pediatric perioperative care, including infant intubation practices, opioid-sparing pain management in pediatric burn patients, pediatric patient experience, and resident airway education. Shah maintains active memberships in the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia and the American Society of Anesthesiologists and holds active medical licensure in both California and Maharashtra, India.
