Dmitry A. Fishman
Adjunct Professor, Department of Chemistry
Director, Laser Spectroscopy Laboratories
Biography
Dmitry A. Fishman received Ph.D. from University of Groningen (Netherlands) in 2008. Since then, he worked at several universities and national labs across the globe, including Grenoble High Magnetic Field Laboratory (CNRS, France), College of Optics and Photonics at University of Central Florida (USA).
Prof. Fishman research interests lie at the intersection of photonics, physical chemistry, and condensed matter physics and chemistry. His research team goal is to identify, understand, and control photonic phenomena and light-matter interactions across scales. They pursue this by (a) developing and utilizing a range of linear and nonlinear optical techniques to probe matter across scales and (b) constructing microscopic models to describe the observed phenomena. This knowledge is essential for uncovering new mechanisms to manipulate and enhance light-matter interactions, paving the way for novel approaches in energy conversion, light emission, and detection, including chemically selective methods. Their studies on light-matter interactions have led to several discoveries and pioneering spectroscopic modalities, including:
• expansion of the momentum spectrum of confined photons, enabling colossal optical absorption enhancement and broadband light emission from momentum-forbidden systems such as bulk silicon
• first demonstration of efficient infrared light detection using conventional visible detectors
• several unique label-free chemically sensitive imaging modalities, including high speed 3D IR imaging and hyperspectral IR imaging.
• ultrafast time-resolved imaging beyond the diffraction limit via photo-induced forces
• first observation of single-molecule vibrations in real time
These research endeavors have enabled Dr. Fishman to fully sponsor, build and currently support the Laser Spectroscopy Laboratories at UC Irvine, an advanced scientific infrastructure dedicated to research and education in light-matter interactions, linear and nonlinear optics, physics, and chemistry. The laboratory actively supports diverse research and educational initiatives, collaborating with over 150 research groups across 26 departments at UC Irvine, as well as numerous domestic and international partners and collaborators.
