Biography

Elyse Schoenwald, MSN, RN, CPNP-PC, PMHS, is a Health Sciences Clinical Associate Professor, Step II, at the Center for Autism & Neurodevelopmental Disorders at the University of California, Irvine. She received her Master of Science in Nursing and Nurse Practitioner Certificate from the University of California, Long Beach, specializing in pediatrics. As a certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Pediatric Primary Care Mental Health Specialist, Schoenwald provides direct patient care through evaluation and treatment of patients with autism spectrum disorder and associated conditions including ADHD, specific learning disorders, intellectual disabilities, anxiety disorders, and genetic syndromes.

Schoenwald serves as a board member of the Epic Developmental Medicine Specialty Steering Board, where she collaborates with providers across the United States to develop best practices and workflows for developmental and behavioral pediatrics within the Epic electronic medical records system. She was instrumental in creating and implementing a Developmental Behavioral Pediatric template for Epic released in February 2024. She has also served as Adjunct Professor at California State University, Long Beach, in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program since 2012, teaching on topics including autism spectrum disorder, Fragile X syndrome, and psychopharmacology of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Prior to her position at UC Irvine, Schoenwald worked at Miller Children's & Women's Hospital in Long Beach from 2010 to 2016, where she served as Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Fragile X Program Clinic Coordinator, and Research Sub-Investigator for Fragile X clinical trials. She is a Fellow of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and a member of the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. Schoenwald has presented at conferences for NAPNAP and the International Fragile X Conference, and developed a course on navigating special education services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities as part of a grant-funded project with Special Olympics.
