Ehsan Shamloo Aliabadi
Biography
Ehsan Shamloo Aliabadi, Ph.D., is an Assistant Specialist in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of California, Irvine, and Co-Founder of ELEXAN Scientific. A chemical engineer and biomedical scientist, Shamloo Aliabadi has focused his career on developing and scaling diagnostic and medical device technologies, with particular expertise in microfluidics, electrochemical biosensors, and process development for regulated products.
Shamloo Aliabadi received his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of California, Irvine in 2021. During his doctoral research, he designed and implemented a low-cost LED-based UV lithography system for fabricating sub-micron, high-aspect-ratio SU-8 electrodes and optimized carbon interdigitated electrode array (C-IDEA) designs, achieving a 48x redox amplification factor. He also translated a benchtop assay for bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing into a miniaturized DNA microarray format on a centrifugal microfluidic platform during his work with MicrobeDx Inc., developing both the custom instrument and image-processing software for automated analysis.
As Senior Scientist at Autonomous Medical Devices Inc. from 2020 to 2023, Shamloo Aliabadi designed and validated scalable manufacturing processes for protein microarrays, achieving production of 10,000 units per day with 99% yield, and directed technology transfer and validation protocols. He functionalized Surface Acoustic Wave biosensors with optimized surface chemistries, achieving femtogram-level detection limits for Troponin I. In his current role at UC Irvine, he leads the design and fabrication of sub-100 nm gold interdigitated electrode arrays and supervises work on an NSF-funded project to scale C-IDEA technology for point-of-care applications. In 2025, he co-founded ELEXAN Scientific to expand access to microfluidic technologies across North America.
