Franco De Flaviis

Professor - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Biography

Franco De Flaviis, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1997. De Flaviis has been a faculty member at UC Irvine since 1998, advancing from Assistant Professor to Full Professor in 2009.

De Flaviis is an IEEE Fellow, elected in 2014. His research focuses on antenna design and reconfigurable antenna systems, particularly using RF MEMS technology for wireless communications. He has developed MEMS-integrated reconfigurable antennas for adaptive MIMO systems and millimeter-wave applications, including Fabry-Perot cavity antennas for 60 GHz wireless systems. His work spans antenna arrays, microwave circuits, and electromagnetic materials, with applications ranging from 5G communications to radar systems. He has secured over $10 million in extramural funding from agencies including DARPA, NSF, and industry partners such as Broadcom, Intel, and Samsung.

De Flaviis has supervised 20 Ph.D. students to completion and 14 M.S. students, with many graduates holding positions at companies including Apple, Broadcom, Qualcomm, and Samsung. He has authored over 70 journal articles and 200 conference papers, and holds 18 patents. He has served as Associate Editor for the IEEE Applied Wireless and Propagation Journal and Electromagnetics Journal, and as a member of the International Union of Radio Science U.S. Commission B. He teaches courses in network analysis and microwave integrated circuit design at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
