Biography

Fabio M. Sagebin, M.D., is Surgical Director of the UCI Heart and Vascular Institute at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Sagebin received his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine in 2013 and completed his residency training in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he developed skills in mechanical circulatory support including ECMO and LVAD, as well as minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Sagebin was a Top Gun Finalist at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons in 2017 and co-invented InstaTract, a minimally invasive mitral valve retractor presented at the Biomedical Engineering Symposium at the University of Rochester. His work has been published in journals including Annals of Surgery, Journal of Thoracic Disease, and Chest, with particular focus on extracorporeal life support and ventricular assist device management.

Sagebin's clinical and research work focuses on mechanical circulatory support, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and cardiogenic shock. He has contributed to the development of surgical techniques for ventricular assist device implantation, including sternal-sparing approaches for patients with prior sternotomy. His research has examined outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock requiring mechanical support, as well as the management of complications in ventricular assist device recipients.

Today he runs a busy clinical practice including minimally invasive complex valve repair and replacement, total arterial revascularization, complex aortic and aortic arch surgery, and management of complex cardiogenic shock. He also works with the enterprise in growing cardiovascular services throughout the hospital system.
