Geruo A
Project Scientist, Dept. of Earth System Science, University of California, Irvine
Biography
Geruo A is a Project Scientist in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics with an emphasis on Geophysics from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2013, where he worked under the supervision of Professor John Wahr. He received his B.S. in Physics from Peking University in 2006. A joined UCI in 2014 as a postdoctoral scholar and has progressed through the ranks to his current position as Project Scientist since 2022.
A's research focuses on hydroclimate variability and extremes, glacial isostatic adjustment modeling, and the application of satellite remote sensing to understand global water resources and ecosystem productivity. He has authored 29 peer-reviewed publications with over 4,600 citations and an h-index of 17. His work includes contributions to major international collaborations such as the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Intercomparison Exercise (IMBIE) and the European Space Agency's Glacier Mass Balance Intercomparison Exercise (GlaMBIE). A serves as a team member on multiple NASA missions including GRACE, GRACE-FO, and SMAP, and has been a reviewer for numerous scientific journals including Nature Climate Change, Geophysical Research Letters, and Water Resources Research.
A has secured significant research funding as a co-investigator on grants totaling over $3 million, including a current $2 million UCOP Climate Action project focused on climate-water prediction systems. He has mentored seven graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in areas ranging from machine learning applications to glacial isostatic adjustment modeling. A contributes to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts through his participation in the UCI Department of Earth System Science NSF Unlearning Racism in Geoscience program and serves on the department's Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee. He has presented his research at over 50 conferences and maintains active membership in the American Geophysical Union.
