Biography

Deborah Goodman, M.D., Ph.D., is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Program in Public Health, and the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, School of Medicine, at the University of California, Irvine. She received her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1993 and her M.D. from Rosalind Franklin University/The Chicago Medical School in 1987. Goodman is board certified in Preventive Medicine and has served as a Breast Health Specialist for the WISDOM Study and Athena Breast Health Network at UC Irvine since 2012.

Goodman's research focuses on breast cancer risk assessment and personalized screening, as well as the intersection of environmental exposures, genetics, and chronic disease. She serves as UC Irvine Site Principal Investigator for two major studies: a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)-funded randomized trial comparing personalized versus annual breast cancer screening (2017-2025) and a Department of Defense-funded study examining genetic, epigenetic, and environmental contributions to breast cancer risk assessment (2024-2028). Her earlier work as Principal Investigator on a National Institutes of Health study examined DHEA replacement in healthy older adults, with total funding exceeding $1.6 million.

Goodman has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles examining topics including sex hormones and cardiovascular disease, breast cancer risk factors in multiethnic populations, epigenetic markers of environmental exposures, and participant perspectives on genomic research and data sharing. Her work has appeared in journals such as Circulation, BMJ, Diabetes Care, and the American Journal of Epidemiology. She has contributed to the development of personalized breast cancer prevention decision aids and has been involved in multiple large-scale cohort studies including the Women's Health Initiative and the Athena Breast Health Network.
