Jason Schiffman

Biography

Jason Schiffman, Ph.D., is Professor and Director of Clinical Training in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Irvine, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior in the School of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Southern California in 2003. Schiffman is a licensed clinical psychologist in California and serves as one of only a small handful of Yale-certified trainers in the United States for the Structured Interview for Psychosis Risk Syndromes (SIPS), the gold standard assessment tool for predicting psychosis.

Schiffman's research focuses on early identification and intervention for individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis, with particular attention to cultural and contextual factors that influence assessment and treatment. He has secured over $15 million in federal, state, and foundation funding as principal investigator, including multiple grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. His work spans prospective longitudinal studies examining childhood precursors of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, development and validation of screening instruments, and implementation of community-based early intervention programs. He co-founded the Maryland Early Intervention Program and established the Strive for Wellness program, which provides services to youth at risk for psychosis.

Schiffman has published over 210 peer-reviewed journal articles in outlets including the American Journal of Psychiatry, JAMA Psychiatry, and Schizophrenia Bulletin. He serves as Associate Editor for Schizophrenia Bulletin, Early Intervention in Psychiatry, and Psychiatric Services. Within the Society for Research in Psychopathology, he has held multiple leadership positions including Board Member and currently serves as Historian. Schiffman has trained clinical staff at early psychosis programs across the United States and provides consultation to SAMHSA-funded Clinical High Risk for Psychosis grantee programs nationwide. He received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 2017 and the Chancellor's Faculty Award for Undergraduate Mentorship at UC Irvine in 2023.
