Jeffrey Ludwig
Biography
Jeffrey Ludwig, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Teaching and Advisor for the Math Finance Concentration in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Irvine. Before joining UCI in 2018, Ludwig spent over 15 years in quantitative finance, including roles as Portfolio Manager at SAC Capital Management and Millennium Partners, where he managed a $5 billion U.S. Treasury bond basis strategy and $100 million commodities arbitrage strategy. At Pacific Investment Management Company (Pimco), he served as Head of Equity Derivatives, Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager, managing a $22 billion derivatives-based enhanced equity index product with 155 basis points average annual alpha and launching seven new mutual funds spanning international equities, real estate, commodities and TIPS.
From 2014 to 2017, Ludwig served as Director and Head of Ph.D. Research at Jump Labs, the research division of Jump Trading. In this role, he directed research for quantitative high frequency trading spanning machine learning, datamining, predictive analytics, feature selection, and deep learning using 50 petabytes of data and supercomputing grid resources. He sponsored 20 professors and 35 Ph.D. students spanning 22 projects via gift grants at the University of Illinois, creating collaborative endeavors that aligned faculty expertise with Jump projects while sharing market microstructure historical database from 60 exchanges globally and supercomputer grid resources with academic researchers.
Ludwig received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his thesis focused on algorithms for low power multimedia devices. At UCI, he teaches courses in mathematical finance, including fixed income, financial derivatives, and mathematics of finance, with course enrollments ranging from 12 to 186 students. His recent research has focused on pedagogy and active learning in mathematics education, as well as low-power digital signal processing.
