Biography

Jin Yu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Irvine, a position she has held since July 2019. She is also associated with the NSF-Simons Center of Multiscale Cell Fate Research and the Department of Chemistry at UCI starting from March 2020. Yu obtained her Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2007, where she also earned a Master’s degree in Finance. Prior to that, she completed her undergraduate and master's education in Physics at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

Yu's research primarily focuses on the computational modeling of molecular machines and biophysics. She has contributed significantly to the understanding of transcription machinery, DNA repair processes, and the dynamics of biomolecular systems. Yu has published extensively, with over 50 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as the Biophysical Journal, Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, and Nucleic Acids Research. Her research has been funded by multiple grants, including those from the National Science Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Yu has also received the UC Berkeley Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Clare Boothe Luce Fellowship for her research contributions.

At UC Irvine, Yu teaches courses in Biological Physics and Molecular Machine, Statistical Mechanics, and Computational Methods at both undergraduate and graduate levels. She has supervised several doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers, contributing to their academic and professional development. Yu actively participates in academic service, including organizing conferences and focus sessions for professional societies such as the American Physical Society. She also serves as a reviewer for numerous scientific journals, providing expertise in his field to advance scholarly research.
