Biography

Kambiz Afrasiabi, M.D., is Medical Director of Cancer Treatment Medical Center, Inc. and Associate Project Scientist in the Cancer Research Lab at the University of California, Irvine. Since 1997, he has provided cancer care to uninsured and underinsured patients in Orange County, Southern California. Afrasiabi received his M.D. from Shiraz Medical School in Iran in 1983, completed his internal medicine residency at USC Medical Center, and completed a fellowship in medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute and UCLA.

Afrasiabi's research focuses on cancer bioenergetics and the thermodynamic principles underlying malignant transformation. His work explores the design of cancer therapeutics based on converting malignant cells to normal cells rather than destroying them, using approaches that include network landscape energetics measurement through liquid nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mathematical modeling. He has conducted research in multiple laboratories at UCI, including work on mismatch repair enzyme machinery, Gia2 knockout mouse models, and evolutionary biology perspectives on glioma.

Afrasiabi has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles on topics ranging from familial colorectal cancer syndromes to the role of inflammation in malignant transformation. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research, serves on the editorial board of Cancer and Clinical Oncology, and is a member of the Leaders in Health Society at UCI. He holds a provisional patent for nanomachines for cancer treatment and has filed a non-provisional patent application for systems and methods for spatial entropyomics in cancer treatment.
