Biography

Brian Young Kim, MD, MS, CAQSM, is Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at UC Irvine School of Medicine, where he also serves as Program Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship and Head Team Physician for UC Irvine Intercollegiate Athletics. He received his MD from UC Irvine School of Medicine and completed his Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship at UCLA. He also holds an MS in Nutrition Science from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Kim's research focuses on iron deficiency in athletes, bone stress injuries, the Female Athlete Triad and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), sports nutrition, and medical education. He has contributed to multi-year, multisite prospective studies examining risk factors for bone stress injuries in collegiate distance runners, including work on the Female and Male Athlete Triad Cumulative Risk Assessment scores and the effects of nutrition education interventions. His research has been published in journals including the British Journal of Sports Medicine, BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Clinics of North America. His research developing a screening algorithm to detect iron deficiency in college athletes was awarded the Best NCAA Research Award at the 2026 AMSSM Annual Meeting. He was selected as an AMSSM International Traveling Fellowship Junior Traveling Fellow to South Korea in 2025.

Kim serves in several roles within the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), including Co-Chair of the Foundational Articles for Fellowship Training Subcommittee of the Fellowship Committee and Core Faculty for the AMSSM Fellows Research & Leadership Conference. He has been an invited speaker at multiple AMSSM national meetings on topics including survey research methodology, presentation skills, and shoulder and cervical spine examination. He serves as a reviewer for Sports Health Journal, Cureus, and Peer-Reviewed Reports in Medical Education Research (PRiMER).
