Biography

Luis A. Jauregui is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Irvine, where he also serves as the Director of the Irvine Quantum Materials Center. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 2016, specializing in Microelectronics and Nanotechnology/Solid State Physics under the supervision of Yong P. Chen. Before joining UC Irvine in 2019, Jauregui was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University, collaborating with Philip Kim, Hongkun Park, Mikhail Lukin, and Federico Capasso.

Jauregui's research is centered on the electronic properties of topological materials and nanostructures, with a focus on graphene and topological insulators. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles, including works published in high-impact journals such as Nature Communications, Nature Materials, and Physical Review Letters, and has an h-index of 33 with more than 8,000 citations. His research has been recognized with the NSF CAREER Award (2022-2027). He has also received the APL Early Career Outstanding Presentation Award in 2023 and the Outstanding Faculty Award for Undergraduate Teaching in 2024.

At UC Irvine, Jauregui is involved in both teaching and research mentorship. He teaches courses in physics and mentors both graduate and undergraduate students, including underrepresented groups in STEM. He is the founder of the Quantum Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (QUROP) in collaboration with the Eddleman Quantum Institute, which funds summer research opportunities for students. Additionally, he has contributed to the development of a quantum-based teaching laboratory used by over 100 students annually. Jauregui also serves the professional community as a reviewer for various scientific proposals and journals.
