Marco Levorato
Biography
Marco Levorato, Ph.D., is Professor in the Computer Science Department at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, with courtesy appointments in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the California Institute for Information Technologies. He received his Ph.D. in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Padova in 2009 and completed postdoctoral research at Stanford University and the University of Southern California under the supervision of Andrea Goldsmith and Urbashi Mitra.
Levorato's research focuses on edge computing and distributed machine learning for autonomous systems, including unmanned aerial vehicles and connected vehicles. His work addresses the design of split deep neural networks, dynamic resource allocation, and cognitive interference management in wireless networks. He has secured research funding from NSF, DARPA, Cisco, and the University of California Office of the President, with total funding exceeding $5 million as principal investigator. His research has been recognized with the Best Paper Award at IEEE Globecom 2012 and has been featured in PC Magazine.
Levorato serves as Associate Editor for IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking and has held editorial positions with IEEE Transactions on Communications and Computer Networks. He has chaired multiple workshops and symposia at conferences including IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE Secon, and IEEE SmartGridComm. At UC Irvine, he serves as Director of the Networked Systems Program and has been a member of the Council on Planning & Budget. He received the UCI Early Career/Emerging Innovator of Year Award in 2023-2024, the Dean's Mid Career Research Award in 2019, and the University of California Hellman Award in 2016.
