Assistant Project Scientist IV, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Genetic and Genomic Medicine, University of California, Irvine

Biography

Lan Nguyen Weiss, MD, PhD, is Assistant Project Scientist IV in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Genetic and Genomic Medicine, at the University of California, Irvine, where she works under Professor Virginia Kimonis. She holds an MD from Hue University in Vietnam and a PhD in Medical Science in Infection Research from Nagasaki University in Japan, where her doctoral work identified HLA-DRB1*0901 as a protective allele against severe dengue virus infection. Before joining UC Irvine, she served as a researcher and departmental vice head at the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where she led dengue immunology studies and developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification diagnostic test for meningitis.

Over more than a decade at UC Irvine, Weiss has built a translational research program focused on rare neuromuscular, lysosomal, and mitochondrial disorders, with particular depth in antisense oligonucleotide therapeutics and AAV-based gene therapy. Her work on glycogen synthase-targeting ASO strategies in Pompe disease and ASO approaches in VCP-associated multisystem proteinopathy has contributed to publications in Clinical and Translational Medicine and to extramural funding including NIH R21AG093390 and a Muscular Dystrophy Association grant. She has also advanced AAV and mRNA-LNP delivery platforms for VCP, NUBPL, and beta-mannosidosis, and has led enzyme replacement therapy evaluation for beta-mannosidosis in disease-relevant cell and mouse models.

Weiss maintains a long-standing collaboration with Ionis Pharmaceuticals on antisense oligonucleotide programs and with JCR Pharmaceuticals Japan on enzyme replacement therapy and CNS drug delivery platform technology. She has presented her research at national and international conferences including the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy and the Muscular Dystrophy Association annual meeting, and she mentors Bio 199 students, research fellows, and technical staff in the Kimonis laboratory on an ongoing basis.
