Biography

Muhammed Alaa Moukhtar Hammad, MBBCh, is a Research Fellow in the Department of Urology at the University of California, Irvine. He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBCh) from Mansoura Faculty of Medicine in Egypt and completed a Master of Biomedical and Translational Science (MS-BATS) at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine in 2023. His research focuses on urological diseases, particularly sexual dysfunction and prostate cancer, with ongoing investigations into the microbiome's role in erectile dysfunction and Peyronie's disease, as well as novel therapeutic interventions including low-intensity shock wave therapy and radiofrequency treatments.

Dr. Hammad has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to multiple book chapters in andrology and urology. His work spans collaborative multi-institutional studies on penile prosthetic surgery, testosterone replacement therapy, and sexual medicine. He has received multiple research grants, including as primary investigator for a 2025 Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) Scholars in Sexuality Grant to develop machine learning models for predicting inflatable penile prosthesis complications. He serves on the editorial board of Therapeutic Advances in Urology and reviews for numerous journals including Sexual Medicine Reviews and the International Journal of Impotence Research.

Dr. Hammad has presented his research at national and international conferences, receiving recognition including Best Adult Abstract at the 2023 North American Robotic Urology Symposium, Best Surgical Abstract at the 2023 World Meeting on Sexual Medicine, and the Outstanding Fellow/Resident Research Award from the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine in 2024. He is an active member of the American Urological Association, Sexual Medicine Society of North America, and International Society for Sexual Medicine, and serves as a member of the SMSNA Medical Student & Resident Committee.
