Masaki Nagamine
Biography
Masaki Nagamine, M.D., is Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurology at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, where he serves as Neurohospitalist Program Director and Neurology Residency Program Director. He received his M.D. from Michigan State University and completed his neurology residency, chief residency, and vascular neurology fellowship at UC Irvine. His clinical and research interests focus on vascular neurology, including ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, as well as the application of artificial intelligence in acute stroke care and neurohospitalist medicine.
Nagamine founded UCI's neurohospitalist program in 2023 and coordinates with hospital administration to optimize inpatient workflows and care metrics. He serves as site principal investigator for the Sleep for Stroke Management and Recovery Trial (SleepSMART) and previously served as site principal investigator for the Annexa-I trial. His research on artificial intelligence in stroke imaging has been published in the American Journal of Neuroradiology and Frontiers in Neurology, examining the accuracy of AI tools in measuring intracerebral hemorrhage volumes and detecting large vessel occlusions.
Nagamine has received multiple teaching awards from UC Irvine, including the UCI Neurology Faculty Teaching Award in 2023 and 2024, and the UCI Medical Education Excellence in Teaching award in 2023 and 2024. He serves on multiple departmental committees, including the Education Committee, Stroke Steering Committee, and Clinical Competency Committee. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Neurohospitalist Society, and the Orange County Stroke Society.
