Matthew J. Bietz
Biography
Matthew J. Bietz, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Teaching and MHCID Faculty Director in the Department of Informatics at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. His research examines the social and organizational dimensions of data-intensive science, personal health data, and cyberinfrastructure development, with particular attention to issues of data ethics, privacy, and the design of collaborative systems. Bietz has served as principal investigator on multiple National Science Foundation grants, including a $3 million project on pervasive data ethics for computational research.
Bietz has published extensively on topics including scientific collaboration, data sharing practices, and the ethical implications of personal health data collection. His work has appeared in venues such as Big Data & Society, the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, and the ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work. He has also contributed to interdisciplinary research on citizen science health research, privacy perceptions among youth and adults, and the development of standards in large-scale collaborative science projects.
Bietz received his Ph.D. in Information from the University of Michigan School of Information. He has held research positions at the University of Washington and served as an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering. He served as General Co-Chair for the ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work in 2020 and has been active in conference organization and program committees for venues including CHI, CSCW, and ECSCW.
