Toby Meadows

Associate Professor in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science

Biography

Toby Meadows, Ph.D., is Associate Professor in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine. His research focuses on the philosophy of set theory and mathematical logic, with particular attention to questions of theoretical equivalence, pluralism in mathematical foundations, and the relationships between different foundational frameworks. Before joining UC Irvine in 2018, Meadows held positions at the University of Queensland, the University of Aberdeen, and the University of St Andrews, and was a Marie Curie International Incoming Fellow at the University of Bristol and University of Aberdeen from 2012 to 2014.

Meadows has published over twenty journal articles in venues including the Bulletin of Symbolic Logic, Review of Symbolic Logic, Journal of Philosophical Logic, and Synthese. His work addresses fundamental questions about the nature of set theory, including the viability of multiverse approaches, the interpretation of forcing, and the criteria for comparing different foundational systems. He has also contributed to debates about semantic theories of truth, infinitary logic, and the philosophical implications of categoricity theorems.

Meadows received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Melbourne in 2011. He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Philosophical Logic and as Editor of the Set Theory section for PhilPapers. At UC Irvine, he serves as Placement Director for the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science and teaches courses in set theory, computability theory, and symbolic logic.
