Matthew Arthur Inlay
Biography
Matthew Arthur Inlay, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry at the University of California, Irvine, where he also serves as an investigator in the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center and holds faculty appointments in the Institute for Immunology and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Inlay received his Ph.D. from the Division of Biology at the University of California, San Diego in 2003, followed by postdoctoral training at UC San Diego and an extended postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University's Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, where he also trained as a Research Associate from 2010 to 2013. He joined the UC Irvine faculty in 2013.
Dr. Inlay's research focuses on hematopoietic stem cells, with particular emphasis on their embryonic origins and therapeutic applications in allogeneic transplantation. His laboratory has made contributions to understanding the developmental origins of blood-forming cells in the embryonic yolk sac and has identified multipotent progenitors that emerge prior to hematopoietic stem cells during embryonic development. More recently, his work has centered on developing strategies to reduce graft-versus-host disease following allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation through glucocorticoid conditioning of donor cells, while preserving immune function against cancer.
Dr. Inlay has served in numerous leadership roles at UC Irvine, including previous service as Chair of the Shared Resources Committee for the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center from 2018 to 2024, and as Co-Chair of the Immunology emphasis area for the Center for Molecular Biosciences Graduate Program from 2021 to 2026. He currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Human Stem Cell Research Oversight committee, co-director of the Microbiology & Immunology undergraduate major, faculty advisor for the Stem Cell Research Center Flow Cytometry Core, and Ph.D. Grad Advisor for the Department of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry. His research has been supported by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, and private foundations including the Oxnard Foundation.
