Biography

Mohammad Javad Abdolhosseini Qomi, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. His research focuses on the mechanics and physics of porous media, including cement and concrete science, sustainable materials, geologic materials and processes, chemo-poromechanics, nanoscale interfacial phenomena, carbon mineralization, enhanced geothermal systems, and machine learning applications to porous and fractured media. Abdolhosseini Qomi received a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT in 2015.

Abdolhosseini Qomi has secured over $11 million in research funding as lead principal investigator, including a DOE Early Career Award from the Basic Energy Science office in Geoscience (2021) and an NSF CAREER Award from the Engineering for Civil Infrastructure program (2022). His research portfolio includes a $6 million award from the University of California Office of the President AI Science at Scale Initiative for developing a foundation model for subsurface processes, and a $1.8 million DOE Energy Earthshot Center subcontract through Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. His work spans from molecular-scale mechanisms of carbon mineralization in nanoscale interfacial water films to urban-scale physics of flooding.

Abdolhosseini Qomi has published over 60 refereed journal articles with more than 4,500 citations and h-index of 35. His work has appeared in journals including Nature Communications, Physical Review Letters, and Nature Reviews Chemistry. He received the Le Chatelier Award from Cement and Concrete Research Journal in 2025, the Hellman Fellowship for early career scientists in 2019, and the Maseeh Award for Excellence in Teaching from MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2015. He served as Conference Co-Chair for the Engineering Mechanics Institute's Annual Conference in 2025.
