Biography

Maryse Mijalski, Ed.D., is French Language Program Director and Senior Lecturer in the Department of European Languages & Studies at the University of California, Irvine. She has taught French language courses at UCI since 1994, serving as a teaching assistant from 1994-2002 and as a lecturer since 2004. As Program Director since 2010, Mijalski oversees all sections of first- and second-year French, conducts training for new instructors, and develops curriculum for lower-division French courses. Her doctoral research focused on developing intercultural competences through telecollaborative exchanges in foreign language education.

Mijalski's work centers on intercultural competence development and multilingual approaches to French language teaching, particularly for Spanish speakers. She has organized transatlantic online exchanges between UCI students and French university students to promote intercultural learning. She received the Distinguished French Educator Award from the American Association of Teachers of French in 2023 and was named UCI Campus-Wide Lecturer of the Year in 2017.

Mijalski has presented her work on intercultural exchanges, French for Spanish speakers, and multilingual pedagogy at national conferences of the American Association of Teachers of French and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. She has organized two Francophone Job & Career Fairs at UCI with grants from the Albertine Foundation and the Institute for Culture and Education of the French Embassy. Mijalski received her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Higher Education from the University of Southern California in 2014.
