Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Biography

Nader Bagherzadeh, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 1987. Bagherzadeh served as Chair of the ECE/EECS Department from 1998 to 2002 and has been a faculty member at UCI since 1987.

Bagherzadeh's research spans machine learning, quantum computing, distributed and parallel processing, VLSI design, microarchitecture, and low power design. He has supervised over 50 Ph.D. students to completion and more than 40 M.S. students, with research topics ranging from reconfigurable computing and network-on-chip architectures to machine learning accelerators and quantum computing. His work has resulted in over 170 journal publications and more than 190 refereed conference papers. He has secured substantial extramural funding throughout his career, including grants from DARPA, NSF, DTRA, and industry partners totaling millions of dollars for projects on reconfigurable architectures, power management, and radiation characterization of emerging memory technologies.

Bagherzadeh was elected IEEE Fellow in 2014 and received the Khwarizmi International Award in 2014. He has served as Area Editor for IEEE Transactions on Computers and IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing, and has held numerous leadership roles in conferences including General Chair for HPCA-9 and PACT '99. He has also contributed extensively to university service, including leading the creation of the first Computer Science and Engineering undergraduate degree at UCI and serving on multiple campus-level committees including the Campus Council on Planning and Budget.
