Naoki Hida

Assistant Project Scientist, Department of Environmental & Occupational Health

Biography

Naoki Hida, Ph.D., is an Assistant Project Scientist in the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health at the University of California, Irvine. His research focuses on environmental particulate matter exposure and neurotoxicity, particularly in relation to Alzheimer's disease pathology, utilizing approaches including genome-wide CRISPRi screening and cell type-specific proteome analysis. Hida received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from The University of Tokyo in 2006.

Hida's career has centered on developing molecular imaging technologies and cell type-specific analysis methods. His doctoral work involved creating fluorescent indicators for visualizing nanomolar concentrations of nitric oxide in living cells. He subsequently developed multicolor luciferase systems for real-time imaging of protein-protein interactions in living subjects during his postdoctoral work at the Institutes for Molecular Science and The University of Tokyo. At the National Institutes of Health, he worked on genetically encodable probes for micro-RNA and PET imaging of apoptosis. At UC Merced, he developed methods for cell type-specific analysis of nascent RNA and tRNA tagging technology, which led to a U.S. patent.

Hida has published in journals including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, PLoS ONE, and Nucleic Acids Research. His work spans multiple model systems including mice, Drosophila, Xenopus, and C. elegans, with expertise in bioluminescence and fluorescence imaging, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, and click chemistry. He received the Best Poster Award at the 3rd International Symposium on Nanomedicine in 2009 and the Sasagawa Scientific Research Grant from the Japan Science Society in 2008.
