Sergey A. Nizkorodov

Professor of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine

Biography

Sergey A. Nizkorodov is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). He obtained his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Novosibirsk State University, Russia, in 1993, and his graduate degree in physical chemistry from Basel University, Switzerland, in 1997. Nizkorodov joined UCI in 2002 after his postdoctoral research in chemical kinetics and reaction dynamics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and atmospheric chemistry at the California Institute of Technology.

Nizkorodov's research focuses primarily on the chemistry of particulate matter, both in the ambient atmosphere and indoor environments, utilizing advanced spectroscopic and mass-spectrometric techniques. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and has received funding from the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and other agencies. His research interests include atmospheric organic aerosols, photochemical processes, and the photolysis of organic compounds in aerosols. Nizkorodov’s contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Fulbright Scholarship, AAAS Fellowship, and the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award.

At UCI, Nizkorodov teaches various chemistry courses, including general, analytical, and atmospheric chemistry. He has mentored over 100 students across different educational levels, from high school to postdoctoral researchers. His service to the profession includes his tenure as President of the American Association for Aerosol Research and active involvement in various service roles at UCI and within the research community. His dedication to education and research excellence is further exemplified by awards such as the UCI Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research and the Daniel G. Aldrich, Jr. Distinguished University Service Award.
