Neal A. Maler
Biography
Neal A. Maler, M.D., is HS Assistant Clinical Professor, Step 3, in the Endocrinology Division at UC Irvine. He completed his M.D. at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine in 2017, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at Huntington Hospital and an Endocrinology fellowship at UC Irvine. Maler serves as UCI Medical Site Co-Director for Endocrinology at the Orange hospital and outpatient locations, and as Ambassador in Outreach for the endocrinology division.
Dr. Maler's clinical interests focus on endocrine disorders, particularly thyroid disease and diabetes management. He has prior involvement in a clinical trial for Cushing syndrome. He served as co-investigator on a clinical trial testing an HSD1 inhibitor for treating adrenal Cushing syndrome in collaboration with Sparrow Pharmaceuticals. During his residency, he conducted hepatology research at the California Liver Research Institute, evaluating immunotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma and assessing non-invasive tests for liver fibrosis. He has presented case reports and research findings at conferences including the Endocrine Society Conference and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology Conference.
Dr. Maler participates in the UC Irvine Glycemic Committee, where he formulated perioperative guidelines for diabetes management and helped develop hospital-wide insulin protocols for patients receiving enteral and parenteral nutrition. He serves on the Endocrinology Fellowship Program Interview Committee and supervises fellows, residents, and medical students in diabetes and general endocrinology clinics. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
