Chief, Hematology/Oncology, VA Long Beach Healthcare System
Professor of Clinical Medicine (HCOMP, WOS, step V), Department of Medicine, University of California Irvine

Biography

Pankaj Gupta, MBBS, MD, FACP, is Chief of Hematology/Oncology at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System and Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine. He received his MBBS from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India, and completed his MD in Internal Medicine at the same institution. Following training at the Royal Marsden Hospital in the United Kingdom, he completed a fellowship in Hematology-Oncology-Transplantation at the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he subsequently served on the faculty for over two decades before relocating to California in 2018.

Gupta's research spans basic, translational, and clinical investigations in hematologic malignancies and solid tumors. His laboratory work has focused on the role of heparan sulfate proteoglycans in human hematopoiesis and their functional abnormalities in mucopolysaccharidosis type I, leading to the development of stem cell-based therapeutics. His translational research identified the presence of opioid receptors on endothelial and tumor cells and demonstrated that activation of these receptors promotes tumor progression in preclinical models and is associated with shortened survival in patients with lung and prostate cancers. As National Study Chair, he leads an NCI-funded clinical trial through the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology testing an opioid receptor antagonist in advanced non-small cell lung cancer. He has served as Study Chair for a national Cancer and Leukemia Group B trial investigating anti-angiogenic therapy in myelodysplastic syndromes and holds a patent on stroma-derived proteoglycan growth factors. His research has been supported by the NIH and the Department of Veterans Affairs for over two decades.

Gupta serves as Principal Investigator for multiple national cancer clinical trials programs at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, including the NCI-VA NAVIGATE initiative, the Southwest Oncology Group, and the VA Lung Precision Oncology Program (STELLAR), a $4.5 million initiative establishing lung cancer screening and precision oncology trials across Southern California and Nevada. He is a member of the NCI Myelodysplastic Syndromes Intergroup Working Group and the Symptom Management and Quality of Life Steering Committee at the National Cancer Institute. He served on the ABIM Medical Oncology Board Examination Item-Writing Task Force and Standard Setting Panel. Gupta was elected to Fellowship in the American College of Physicians in 2017.
