Biography
Joseph Patterson, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine. A scholar in the fields of polymer chemistry and electron microscopy, Patterson has developed methods to visualize molecular self-assembly processes in real time using liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy. His research focuses on understanding the nucleation and growth mechanisms of soft materials, including block copolymer assemblies, metal-organic frameworks, and biomolecular condensates.
Patterson is a member of the Microscopy Society of America, where he serves as Placement Officer Chair. He received the Burton Medal from the Microscopy Society of America in 2023 and was awarded an NSF CAREER Award in 2023. His research program has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and National Institutes of Health.
Patterson has published 98 peer-reviewed articles with over 4,000 citations and an h-index of 38. He has organized multiple symposia on liquid-phase electron microscopy and serves as co-Director of Education and Outreach for the UCI NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center. Patterson received a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Warwick in 2013 and completed postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Diego and Eindhoven University of Technology, where he held a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship.
