Biography
Qiuping Ma, MD, PhD, is a Staff Pathologist and Director of Core Lab and Point of Care in the Department of Pathology at Veterans Affairs Long Beach. Ma received an MB from Peking University Health Science Center and an MMed in Gynecologic Oncology from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital in China, followed by a PhD in Pathology from the College of Medicine at the University of South Florida. Ma completed residency training in Internal Medicine and OB/GYN in China, followed by a research fellowship in Medical Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, residency and fellowship training in Pathology and Surgical Pathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and a fellowship in GI/Liver/Pancreas Pathology at Duke University Medical Center.
Ma's research has focused on mechanisms of nuclear receptor function in prostate and ovarian cancers, as well as biological processes and therapeutic vulnerabilities in esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, and lung cancers. During the research fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute from 2008 to 2014, Ma contributed to studies on squamous cell carcinomas and gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma models. Ma has also completed quality improvement projects in surgical pathology, microbiology, and molecular diagnostics, including work on pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and colon cancer.
Ma has served as a Staff Pathologist at Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center before joining Veterans Affairs Long Beach in 2022. Ma has been involved in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows at the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University Medical Center, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and Veterans Affairs Long Beach, including didactic lectures and mentoring activities.
