Ryan S. Hsi

Biography

Ryan S. Hsi, M.D., FACS, is Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at the University of California Irvine and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He holds the Ralph V. Clayman Endowed Chair in Endourology at UC Irvine. A specialist in endourology and urinary stone disease, Dr. Hsi focuses his research on the prevention, epidemiology, and medical management of nephrolithiasis, with particular emphasis on leveraging electronic health records, genomic biobanks, and large-scale data resources to improve kidney stone care.

Dr. Hsi is principal investigator or co-investigator on multiple active NIH/NIDDK-funded grants, including a randomized clinical trial of empiric versus selective preventive strategies for kidney stone disease (R01DK129202) and the USDHub project (RC2DK140865), a $7.3 million initiative to build a publicly available longitudinal multi-institutional data resource for urinary stone disease research. He is also dual PI on the the PCORI-funded OASIS (Observational Approach Versus Surgical Intervention for Stones) trial, a pragmatic randomized controlled trial comparing observation versus upfront surgery for asymptomatic kidney stones across 30 medical centers (BPS-2025C1-44653). He also serves as a member of the American Urological Association's Medical and Surgical Management of Kidney Stones Practice Guideline Committee and is a named co-author on the 2026 AUA surgical management of kidney and ureteral stones guidelines. In 2025, Dr. Hsi received the American Urological Association Gold Cystoscope Award for innovative research into the pathophysiology, epidemiology, genetics, and management of urolithiasis.

Dr. Hsi completed his M.D. at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, urology residency at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and a fellowship in laparoscopy and endourology at the University of California San Francisco. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and holds board certification from the American Board of Urology. Dr. Hsi has mentored numerous urology residents and endourology fellows, many of whom have gone on to faculty positions at academic medical centers.
