Robert Sung Gil Kwon
Biography
Robert Sung Gil Kwon, M.D., is a Staff Physician in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System and Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor of UCI Radiation Oncology. He received his M.D. from Temple University School of Medicine and completed his radiation oncology residency at the University of California, Irvine, where he served as Chief Resident. Kwon has over two decades of clinical experience in radiation oncology, having previously served as Medical Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Los Alamitos Medical Center for approximately 16 years.
Kwon's research focuses on prostate cancer, particularly the use of genomic testing and advanced imaging to guide treatment decisions. He serves as a local site investigator for multiple clinical trials, including the VA STARPORT trial examining systemic therapy with or without PET-directed local therapy for oligometastatic prostate cancer, and studies investigating the utility of AI-based predictive models and molecular profiling in veterans with prostate cancer. His recent publications examine the use of cell cycle progression assays and PSMA PET/CT imaging to predict disease upstaging and guide treatment de-escalation in unfavorable intermediate to very high-risk prostate cancer patients.
Kwon is board certified by the American Board of Radiology and holds medical licenses in California, Hawaii. He serves as the Long Beach VA Site Radiation Oncology Program Director for the UCI Radiation Oncology Residency and as a local site investigator for NRG clinical trials. Kwon is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO), where he has served as an abstract reviewer and member of the History Committee, and the Korean American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (KASTRO), where he serves as Social Chair.
