Rachel Cohen Lehman

Rachel Cohen Lehman

Lecturer, Department of Mathematics

Biography

Rachel Cohen Lehman is a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Irvine. She earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics from UCI in 1997, with a dissertation titled "The Acquisition of Stable Percepts via Bayesian Directed Convergence," and completed both her M.S. (1990) and B.S. (1988) in Mathematics at the same institution. Before joining UCI as a lecturer in 1998, Lehman worked as a Member of the Technical Staff at The Aerospace Corporation from 1989 to 1994, where she conducted project development and statistical analysis of satellite and rocket systems.

Lehman's research focuses on mathematical psychology and Bayesian inference systems. She has published three peer-reviewed articles, including work in the Journal of Mathematical Psychology and Advances in Applied Mathematics. Her recent research addresses active learning methodologies in online mathematics education, as documented in her 2022 publication on ALOHA (Active-Learning Office Hours & Assignments) in the Journal of Understanding Interventions. Lehman has secured significant grant funding, including a $200,000 California Learning Lab grant in 2018 and multiple University of California Office of the President grants totaling over $55,000 for online instruction initiatives.

At UCI, Lehman serves as the Pre-calculus Coordinator for online Math 1A and 1B courses and has held the position of Calculus Coordinator for Math 2A and 2B courses during multiple summer sessions. She has developed online pre-calculus courses using ALEKS software, created 140 lecture videos, and designed two MOOCs through Coursera that received transferable credit recognition from the American Council on Education. Lehman has received multiple teaching awards, including the UCI Celebration of Teaching Award for Instructional Technology Innovation in 2013 and Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education Award in 2000. She also provides content consultation services for McGraw Hill LLC and has served on various university committees, including the Professional Development Award Committee.
