Biography
Satish Patnaik Baggam, Ph.D., is an Assistant Project Scientist at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, University of California, Irvine. A molecular biologist with over a decade of training in ocular research, Dr. Baggam investigates ocular disease mechanisms through multi-omics approaches, including single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics. His research spans retinal disorders, lens biology, and meibomian gland dysfunction, with a focus on defining molecular pathways that drive disease and identifying therapeutic targets.
Dr. Baggam received his Ph.D. from the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute (conferred through the University of Hyderabad's Animal Sciences department) in Hyderabad, India, where his doctoral work examined Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) through integrated genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses. His research identified matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) activation in infant tears as an early, non-invasive biomarker and demonstrated that hypoxia-induced microglial MMP9 drives opticin degradation through NOTCH1, ERK1, and WNT signaling pathways. Following his doctorate, he completed postdoctoral training at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA, where he profiled single-cell transcriptomes of cataractous human lens epithelium and discovered a novel long non-coding antisense RNA across the αA-crystallin (CRYAA) locus.
At UC Irvine, Dr. Baggam conducts integrated lipidomics and single-nuclei multiome (snRNA-seq + ATAC-seq) analyses to characterize age-associated molecular changes in meibomian gland progenitors. He has established meibocyte differentiation assays and is leading research on IGF-1–driven progenitor differentiation. In December 2025, following peer-reviewed evaluation by his department chair and the School of Medicine Academic Personnel office, he was advanced to Assistant Project Scientist Step II (effective July 1, 2026). Dr. Baggam received the Young Scientist Award from the Indian Society of Human Genetics in 2022, has served as a peer reviewer on more than 40 manuscripts for leading journals including Scientific Reports, Experimental Eye Research, BMC Ophthalmology, European Journal of Medical Research, and Metabolism, and serves as Guest Editor for the International Journal of Clinical and Medical Case Studies. His work has been presented at three consecutive ARVO Annual Meetings (2019, 2023, 2025, and 2026).
